Accessible Library

General Information

The Library supports access to its spaces, services and resources for people with accessibility needs, including people with disabilities. These measures are intended to enable users to use the Library as independently, comfortably and safely as possible.

Support covers three main areas: architectural accessibility, assistance in using collections and information sources, and organisational solutions facilitating research, teaching and individual study. Library staff provide support, taking into account users’ individual needs and the nature of the materials they are looking for.

Architectural Accessibility

Both entrances to the Library — the main entrance from Wielka Street, located in Building U, and the side entrance from the university campus, located in Building W — are equipped with ramps providing access for wheelchair users. Next to the entrance to Building W, on the university campus, there is a designated parking space for people with disabilities.

Building U has a lift enabling users to move independently between the Library floors. The lift is adapted to the needs of people with mobility impairments and is also equipped with facilities for blind and partially sighted people, including voice announcements and buttons marked in Braille.

The upper floors of Building W can be accessed by an internal lift. To use this lift, please contact the porter’s lodge — in person, in Building U next to the Impel Chillout Room, or by telephone on 71 36 80 964.

The Library spaces are step-free and adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. Accessible toilets for people with disabilities are available on every floor of Building U, and the library service desks are adapted for wheelchair users.

Induction loops are available on two floors of the Library to support communication with people using hearing aids or receivers compatible with the system.

Support in Using Library Resources and Services

The Library provides support in using printed and electronic collections, library catalogues, databases, and workstations and rooms designated for individual study.

People with accessibility needs may use the following forms of support::

  • assistance in searching for catalogue and bibliographic information, as well as information available in databases;
  • booking individual study rooms equipped with assistive technology adapted to users’ individual needs and facilitating the use of the Library’s collections;
  • requesting books located in open-access areas without having to take them from the shelves themselves; the expected processing time is 40–60 minutes.
